Daryl Kay Michaelson passed away peacefully on February 9, 2021 at the Avalon Memory Care facility in Carrollton, TX. He was 78 years old. He was known by many names; Kay to his family, Mike to his friends, and Daryl to telemarketers. He was born in Montpelier, ID on July 7, 1942 to Daryl Wilkes Michaelson and Lois Mae Kunz. He is the oldest of three sons, Jerry born in 1943 and Dan born in 1955. In his younger years, he helped his grandfather, Abel Kunz, with his ranch in Bern, ID. The ranch is where Kay learned to work hard during the day, and play hard with his brother and cousins; Susan, Linda, Mark, and Kyle Kunz.
In 1952 the family relocated to Southern California, where Mike spent the rest of his school years. He had many friends of Japanese descent. Mike loved the Japanese people, their language, their customs and their food. He joined the Air Force in 1964 and spent 3 ½ years in Hokkaido, Japan being a morse code intercept operator. Mike enjoyed his time in the military.
After the military, he returned home and decided to go to Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Vicki Dare Boulter. They were married after a short courtship on November 14, 1969.
Mike returned to the religion of his childhood. He taught his wife about his faith and she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following the birth of their oldest child in 1976, Paul, they were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on January 7, 1977. After Paul, in quick succession, came Jeff (1978), Laura (1980), Ken (1982) and Steven (1984). One of Mike’s priorities was to build a strong family that could lean on each other for support and help at any time. He wanted his family to know about their Heavenly Father. Mike wanted his children to learn how to work and to not be afraid of work.
Mike had an adventurous spirit and was a CPA which made it easy to find a good job.. He felt the need to move about every ten years. The places Mike and his family called home were: Glendale, AZ (1971-1979), Bountiful, UT (1979-1989), Fresno, CA (1989-1998), Hollister, CA (1998-2004), Hughes Springs, TX (2004-2019), and Houston, TX (2019-2021). Mike especially loved living in Texas. He had a big yard to tend, and a John Deere mower that he would take the grandchildren on tractor rides whenever possible.
Serving our Heavenly Father was a priority for Mike. He loved to serve and help people wherever he lived. He did his best to lead, guide and counsel with the people in his various wards. One of the things he always said to his fellow members of The Church of Latter-day Saints was “to be patient and gentle with themselves.” Mike really believed that we are too hard on ourselves. We are not perfect and can only be made perfect through our faith in Jesus Christ.
Mike is survived by his wife, Vicki Dare (Boulter) Michaelson; his children Paul (Cristy) Michaelson - Aaron, Ashlyn, Jacob, and Joshua; Jeff (Amy) Michaelson - Branson; Laura (Andrew) Smith - Rachel, Audrey, and Ian; Ken (Jenny) Michaelson - Camdyn and Nolan; Steven (Rachel) Michaelson - Faye, Charles, and Robert; siblings, Jerry (Judy) Michaelson and Dan Michaelson; as well as nieces and nephews.
