Geraldine Shirley, 94, stepped from mortality on Sunday, November 11,
2018. She had spent the previous week in Bear Lake Memorial Hospital
surrounded by her loving husband and many family members. She will be
missed by all of those who love her.
Geraldine was born in Garden City, Utah, on August 18, 1924, to Willis
Alma Benson and Stella Brooker Benson. She was the oldest of four
children and often remarked that she had a perfect childhood. She loved
the lake and the mountains, especially Beaver Creek where she enjoyed
many childhood summers camping with her family.
Her school years were spent in Rich County where she graduated from
North Rich High School. She always told her children that she got good
grades and never got in trouble!
Evan and Geraldine were married in Paris, Idaho on January 4th, 1943. On
August 5, 1948, at the Logan, Utah, Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints, they were sealed for time and all eternity. They later
spent a few years serving together as ordinance workers in the Logan
Temple and said those were some of their happiest years.
They are the parents of five children: Linda (Tom Rogers); Jeri (Frank
Crawford); Bill (Jan Shirley); Nancy (Rob Reynolds); and Mike (Dottie
Shirley). Also, they loved being with their many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Geraldine’s favorite thing to do was to pick up a grandchild
and read them a book. She loved reading and spent many hours
devouring books.
Geraldine served in many Church callings including Primary and Relief
Society President. She worked hard to fulfill these assignments to the
best of her ability. She was a wonderful cook for her family and loved to
share her goodies with neighbors. Geraldine also worked hard keeping a
beautiful rose garden. She and Evan raised their family in Fish Haven
where they also taught them to work hard and to love the lake! After four
of her five children left home, Geraldine went to Cosmetology school and
then worked several years at home as a beautician.
Geraldine was preceded in death by both of her parents, all three of her
siblings: Kent Benson, Jackie Rich, and Pat Carlson. Also two
granddaughters: Christi Crawford and Kaycee Reynolds Barnett. She is
survived by her husband, Evan Shirley, 96, her five children and many
loving grandchildren.
Services will be held for Geraldine at the Montpelier 2nd Ward, 585 North
8th Street on Friday, November 16, at 2:00 PM, with the viewing beginning
at 12:00 noon. She will then be laid to rest in Fish Haven Cemetery
overlooking the lake she loved so dearly.
